Consuelo Campanile entered the clothing market almost for fun in 1988 with a friend of hers: actually, this was a secondary activity to their main role of mothers. That is why they both oriented towards children's knitwear, in particular casual sweatshirts that were made so popular in those years by the trendy Anglo-Saxon culture.
They stood out by designing sweatshirts with trimmings, grosgrain edging, piqué collars, cotton, liberty fabrics and tone-on-tone broderie anglaise for little girls and crests reminding of royal academies and colleges for little boys.
For this collection, that addressed children aged 3 months-12 years, the two designers devoted the first years of their activity to assimilate and understand the whole production process that could lead not only to a traditional knitwear garment, but also to a unique product in terms of details and manufacture for middle-upper class consumers.
Choices proved to be right after commercial success and business development: in 1993 Consuelo felt she had the vocation and the skills to enter the “world of adults” and designed a bicolour dress (white piqué and coloured cotton) that took inspiration from the ‘60s. This project proved to be successful, but in 1994 Consuelo broke up with her friend to follow her own ideas and impulses. Her first collection exclusively included ceremony wear, characterized by an essential and basic design.
The demand to also try out outerwear was the natural consequence: from 1994 to this date, Consuelo has designed 18 spring-summer and autumn-winter collections enjoying a good reputation among her demanding clients. |
